Google Adding ‘DNS over TLS’ Support to Android

Google has announced the use of “DNS over TLS” support for Android platforms to safeguard users’ internet privacy from their ISPs.

The internet is rapidly growing as one of the most commonly used commodities by the people on this planet.

The recent boom in technology has paved the way for a rapid increase in the use of computers, smartphone devices and other such machines that use the internet in large quantities.

Although there are innumerable benefits to be attributed to the use of the internet, the technology also accompanies a number of problems.

Internet privacy is one of the most prominent issues faced by users on this technology.

In order to counter such issues, Google is adding “DNS over TLS” support in its Android platform.

The developers have made an update for the initiative publically viewable on the Android Open Source Project page.

The DNS over TLS project is meant to safeguard users’ internet privacy from surveillance.

How ISPs Invade Internet Privacy

ISPs, or Internet Service Providers, refer to the companies or organizations from which people obtain their internet services.

Hence, every bit of internet data transaction that happens on any device owned by a person flows through the gates of their ISP.

ISPs also employ a technology commonly referred to as the DNS or Domain Name System. This is a process that is used to determine and return the information that a user seeks on the internet.

Basically, every website is allotted an IP (or Internet Protocol) address with a corresponding website address or URL.

When you search for a website on the internet, the DNS process automatically transforms that URL to its correspondent IP address to seek that website.

This information passes through your ISP, who has logs of every website you visit or use on the internet.

Hence, the privacy of your usage of the internet is compromised to a great extent.

After all, every website that you visit is listed and logged with your ISP for any use they may see fit.

How Google is Protecting Users’ Internet Privacy

Google recently announced that their Android platforms would utilize “DNS over TLS” support in order to enhance internet privacy.

The use of this added security measure will ensure that your browsing history, as well as your overall experience on the internet, is protected from oversight from any governmental or private entities.

This new development will do so by encrypting the DNS requests of your website searches.

The Android operating system is often seen as a soft target for people with skills alluding to hacking or other such illegitimate practices.

This added protection will prevent ISPs from saving or supplying your browsing data for any illegal purposes. This may not completely prevent hackers from entering your private devices, but it will certainly go a long way in offering some additional security to your internet usage.

Moreover, the TLS process does not offer any protection or encryption to the IP addresses of the websites you access, which is obtained during the DNS procedure.

Hence, there is still a possibility that your ISPs can access your browsing history through a back-door.

In order to achieve complete protection from ISPs trying to access your browsing data, using a VPN may still be your best bet for ideal internet privacy.

Google is also making attempts to increase the overall security of internet usage by imposing the widespread usage of HTTPS or Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure Protocol on all websites.

The amount of websites using this protocol is up to an astonishing 89 percent from 50 percent back in 2014.

It can now be estimated that within the next couple of years, almost all websites present on the internet will utilize this protocol to make their internet portals more secure.

These measures will certainly help to make internet usage much more secure and private in the near future.
